Chapter Sketch
In the chapter ‘From the Diary of Anne Frank’, the writer Anne Frank tells about her true companion-a diary. She writes everything about her life in her diary and considers it her true friend. At the time of invasion of German over Flolland, her family hid itself. At that time she started to write in her diary. She spent her adolescent years hidden from outside world, and her diary kept all her secrets.

OVERVIEW OF THE CHAPTER
Anne Frank’s First Entry in the Diary
Anne Frank a thirteen year old girl was gifted a diary by her father. So she decided to write in her diary which she considered to be her best friend in loneliness and named it ‘Kitty’. She began writing in June 1942. In her first entry she expressed her desire to confide everything to the diary as she hadn’t been able to do so to anyone else. She felt that paper had more patience than people. Secondly she thought that nobody would be interested in her diary as she was a small girl.

Her Childhood and Family
Anne called her father as the most adorable person. He was 36 when he married her mother, who was just 25. She has an older sister Margot. She had about 30 people around her but she had no true friend. They lived in Frankfurt for sometime but as they were jewish they had to migrate to Holland for refuge. Her mother stayed with her grandmother but went to Holland to her father.

Anne’s Schooling
She was sent to a Montessori nursery school. She stayed there until she was six. At her farewell she and her headmistress Mrs Kuperus had tears in their eyes.

Her Grandmother’s Death
In the summer of 1941 her grandmother fell ill. She had to be. operated upon but she died in January 1942. It gave Anne a shock and she did not write her diary in that period, but after that she wrote again as she thought of her grandmother’s love and affection.

Her view About Teachers
Anne was not good at maths so she and her friends were always worried about it, but she was sure that she would go to the next class. She always considered teachers to be the most unpredictable creatures on the earth. So she told her friends not to lose hope.

Punishment by Mr Keesing
Anne was a good student and had a good relationship with all the teachers except Mr Keesing, who taught her Maths. He was always annoyed by her talkative nature. He used to give her extra homework as punishment. He asked her to write an essay on ‘A Chatterbox.’ He also put a slip of it on her bag to remind her about it.

Completion of Homework
Anne was unable to understand what she could write in the essay. She started writing to consider it the necessity. She wrote the three pages for her satisfaction. She defined it as a feature of a student and also mentioned that she inherited this trait from her mother who also used to talk much.

Homework given as Punishment Again
Mr Keesing read Annes’ essay in front of class and laughed at it. He gave her another essay as a punishment on the topic ‘An Incorrigible Chatterbox’ and Quack, Quack, Quack, said Mistress Chatterbox’.

Anne Mocks Mr Keesing Amusingly with her Homework
Anne wanted to write something interesting and different this time. So, with the help of her friend Sanne who was good at poetry, she wrote an essay in verse. It was about three duckling going deaf because their father duck beat them as they quack way too much. Mr Keesing took the joke in the right way and didn’t bother Anne for talking after that incident. She was not even given any extra homework after that.

ऐन अपनी डायरी लिखती है। वह महसूस करती है कि ऐसा करना उस जैसी के लिए एक अद्भुत अनुभव है। यह ऐसे है। क्योंकि उसने पहले कुछ भी नहीं लिखा। दूसरे, उसके द्वारा कुछ भी लिखे जाने को पढ़ने में कोई रुचि नहीं लेगा क्योंकि वह एक छोटी-सी लड़की है।

डायरी का लिखना
एक दिन ऐन थोड़ी-सी उदास थी। उसने महसूस किया कि व्यक्तियों से अधिक कागज में सहनशीलता है। उसे आश्चर्य था कि क्या वह अंदर रहे या बाहर जाए। अन्त में वह अन्दर रही और उसने सोचा। उसने महसूस किया कि वह किसी को भी अपनी ‘डायरी’ नहीं पढ़ने देगी जब तक उसे कोई वास्तविक मित्र प्राप्त नहीं होगा। इसलिए उसने इसे लिखा।

अपने परिवार के बारे में लिखना
उसने लिखा कि वह संसार में पूर्ण रूप से अकेली नहीं थी। परन्तु उसके प्रिय माता-पिता थे और सोलह वर्ष की एक बहन। उसके चारों तरफ लगभग तीस व्यक्ति थे जिन्हें वह मित्र कह सकती थी। फिर उसका परिवार, चाचियाँ और एक अच्छा घर था। परन्तु उसका कोई सच्चा मित्र नहीं था। उसने अच्छा समय व्यतीत करने का सोचा जब वह अपने मित्रों के साथ थी। परन्तु वह समीप नहीं आ सकी। उसने इसे अपना कसूर माना कि वह एक-दूसरे में विश्वास नहीं डाल सकी। क्योंकि वे बदल नहीं सके इसलिए उसने एक डायरी लिखनी आरम्भ कर दी। उसने इसे अपनी मित्र बना लिया।

डायरी का नाम ‘किट्टी’-जीवन का संक्षिप्त रेखाचित्र
वह अपनी डायरी को अपना मित्र मानना चाहती थी। इसलिए उसने उस अपनी मित्र का नाम किट्टी रखा। उसने अपने जीवन का एक संक्षिप्त रेखाचित्र खींचा यद्यपि ऐसा करना वह पसंद नहीं करती थी। इसलिए उसने इसे लिखा। उसने लिखा कि उसके पिता ने छत्तीस वर्ष की आयु में उसकी पच्चीस वर्षीय माँ से शादी की। उसकी बहन मारगोट 1926 में फ्रैंकफर्ट, जर्मनी में पैदा हुई। वह 12 जून 1929 को पैदा हुई। उसका पिता 1933 में हॉलैण्ड में बसने के लिए चला गया। उसकी माँ ऐडिथ हॉलैण्डर फ्रैंक उसके पिता के साथ हॉलैण्ड चली गई। परन्तु अपनी दादी के साथ रहने के लिए वह और उसकी बहन ऐकन भेज दी गईं। फिर वे हॉलैण्ड चली गईं।

ऐन का स्कूल
वहाँ पर उसे मौन्टेसरी नर्सरी स्कूल भेजा गया। वह वहाँ पर छह वर्ष की आयु तक रही। छठी कक्षा में उसकी अध्यापिका हैडमिस्ट्रेस मिसेज क्युपरस थी। दोनों विदा होने पर रोई।।

डायरी न लिखने के कारण
1941 की ग्रीष्म ऋतु में उसकी दादी बीमार पड़ गई। उसका आपरेशन करना पड़ा। वह जनवरी 1942 में परलोक सिधार गई। उसने उसके बारे में काफी सोचा और वह उसे अब भी प्यार करती थी। उन्होंने ऐन का जन्मदिन 1942 में मनाया। 20 जून 1942 तक चारों ठीक समय व्यतीत कर रहे थे। तब ऐन ने अपनी डायरी फिर लिखी। यह ऐसे थी।

कक्षा के मामलों के बारे में
परिणामों की घोषणा का दिन था। उसकी कक्षा का हरेक व्यक्ति तनाव में था। कारण था कौन अगली कक्षा में जाएगा और कौन नहीं। उनकी दूसरे लड़कों के साथ शर्ते लगी थीं कि कौन पास होगा और कौन नहीं। उसने पाया कि पृथ्वी पर अध्यापक ऐसे प्राणी हैं जिनके बारे में कतई भविष्यवाणी नहीं की जा सकती थी। वह अपने और अपनी लड़की मित्रों के बारे में चिन्तित नहीं थी। उसे पास होने में विश्वास था। परन्तु गणित में उसे विश्वास नहीं था। वे प्रतीक्षा कर सकते थे और उन्होंने एक-दूसरे से दिल न हारने के लिए कहा।

सजा के रूप में मि, कीसिंग द्वारा दिया गृहकार्य
उसकी अपने अध्यापकों के साथ खूब निभी। मि. कीसिंग एक सुस्त व्यक्ति था जो उन्हें गणित पढ़ाता था। वह उससे हमेशा काफी गुस्से में रहता क्योंकि वह काफी बातें करती थी। उसने उसे फालतू गृहकार्य सजा के रूप में दिया। यह एक प्रस्ताव ‘AChatterbox के रूप में था। वह समझ नहीं सकी कि वह इसके बारे में क्या लिखे। उसने अपने स्कूल बैग पर एक स्लिप लगा ली। यह स्वयं को बाद में लिखने के लिए याद दिलाने के लिए थी।

मि, कीसिंग ने इसे पढ़ा और वह हँसा। तब उसने उसे दूसरा लेख दिया क्योंकि उसने बोलना बन्द नहीं किया। उसने इसे “An Incorrigible Chatterbox पर लिखना था। उसने इसे लिखा और इसने मि, कीसिंग को सन्तुष्ट कर दिया। वह दो पाठों तक नहीं बोली। परन्तु तीसरे पाठ में उसने फिर बोलना आरंभ कर दिया। उसने उसे फिर एक लेख लिखने के लिए कहा। यह था : “Quack, Quack, Quack, Said Mistress Chatterbox’। इसे सुनकर कक्षा भी खूब हँसी। वह भी हँसी। वह अब कुछ मूल लिखना चाहती थी। उसकी मित्र सेन कविता में अच्छी थी। उसने उसे प्रस्ताव को पद्य में लिखने में उसकी सहायता की।

ऐन की कविता स्वयं मि. कीसिंग पर मजाक
ऐन ने अपनी कविता समाप्त की। यह एक बत्तख माँ और हंस पिता और उनके तीन बच्चों के बारे में थी। तीनों बच्चों को पिताजी द्वारा दाँतों से काटकर मार दिया गया। यह इसलिए था क्योंकि वे काफी बोलते थे। भाग्यवश, मि, कीसिंग ने इस मज़ाक को ठीक तरीके से लिया। मि. कीसिंग ने उस पर मजाक किया था। परन्तु उसने इसे उसी पर कर दिया। उसने कविता को क्लास के सामने पढ़ा और अपनी टिप्पणियाँ दीं। तब से उसे बोलने दिया गया था। उसे फालतू गृहकार्य भी नहीं मिला। मि. कीसिंग ने कक्षा में मजाक करना जारी रखा।
