Chapter Sketch
‘The Book that Saved the Earth’ by Claire Boiko is set in the twenty-fifth century. It is a humorous tale of how a book of nursery rhymes saves Earth from an invasion by Martians.

About the Characters

• Historian : He is a member of the Museum of Ancient History and the Department of the Twentieth Century.
• Think-Tank : He is the Commander-in-Chief of the Martian forces and prepares to invade Earth.
• Noodle : He is an trainee under Think-Tank. He is a sensible and level headed figure.
• Captain Omega, Lieutenant lota, Sergeant Oop : They are the crew of probe one. They are sent to Earth to know about Earth before invading it.

OVERVIEW OF THE CHAPTER
Historian Talks about a Book that Saved Earth :
It is the twenty fifth century. The scene is set at the Museum of Ancient History. The department is that of twentieth century. Historian tells the people that twentieth century was called the Era of the Book. There were books on everything. They covered all aspects of life. She tells that Martians (People of Mars) decided to invade Earth in 2040. Everyone was surprised to know that it was a book that saved the Earth. She turns on the projector and shows how it all happened.

Think-Tank Orders the Invasion of Earth :
The ruler of Mars, the Mighty Think-Tank, is a proud creature whose head is full of himself. He calls earth a ridiculous planet. He commands his trainee Noodle to call the space probe that is invading the Earth.

Space Probe Lands in Centerville Public Library :
The space probe finds itself in a Centerville Public library. They are puzzled. They are not familiar with books. They do not understand what are those thousands of objects.

Guesses made by Martians about the Books :
Sergeant Oop thinks that the books are hats. But Think-Tank calls them sandwiches and orders the crew to eat them. The wise noodle gently suggests that they may be devices of communication. Think-Tank asks the probe team to listen to them. They do not hear anything. Again, Noodle very politely suggests that earthlings watched them. They cannot read the books and come to a conclusion that the printed lines and pictures must be some kind of code.

Think-Tank Commands the Team to Take Vitamins :
Think-Tank asks the probe team to eat the vitamins given to them. They follow him and are able to read the book. The lines are about Mistress Mary and her garden of cockle shells and silver bells. There is a line were a dish runs away with a spoon.

Mighty Think-Tank is Alarmed :
Think-Tank thinks that the earthlings were very advanced. They grew shells and silver. They had taught animals culture and music. He thought they were about to send cows for an invasion to the moon. He is further terrified when he is sent the picture of the fallen Humpty-Dumpty. He thinks it to be his picture.

Think-Tank Calls Off the Invasion :
He cancels the invasion. He asks his probe to leave. He orders his fleet to escape to the star Alpha Centauri and evacuate Mars. He wants to be as far away as possible from earthlings.

Martians and Earthlings are Friends in Twenty Fifth Century :
The Historian reveals that it was ‘Mother Goose’, a book of rhymes, that saved the Earth. Anyway, Noodle succeeded Think-Tank and became the head of Mars. Mars and Earth were now friends. Earthlings had even set up a library in their capital, Marsopolis. Funnily, however, Martians could never gather the courage to read the ‘Mother Goose’ book.

Chapter Highlights

1. The Historian welcomes visitors to the Museum of Ancient History in the twenty-fifth century.
2. She informs them how a book saved the Earth from a Martian invasion in 2040.

13. Think-Tank assumes that earthlings were a very advanced civilisation.
14. Think-Tank is further terrified when he sees the picture of Humpty Dumpty. He assumes that earthlings were planning to capture him by invading Mars.
15. He orders the Martian fleet to evacuate Mars and he decides to flee to the stars Alpha Centauri to escape from earthlings.
16. In the twenty fifth century, the Historian says that people of Earth and Martians are friends. Earthlings have established a library in the Martian capital of Marsopolis.

यह पच्चीसवीं शताब्दी का समय है। पुरातन इतिहास का अजायबघर, स्थान है। यह पृथ्वी ग्रह पर बीसवीं शताब्दी का कक्ष है। हिस्टोरियन मेज पर बैठी हुई है। मेज पर मूवी प्रोजैक्टर रखा हुआ है।

हिस्टोरियन बताती है कि कैसे पृथ्वी को एक पुस्तक ने बचाया
हिस्टोरियन बीसवीं शताब्दी की उत्सुकताओं का स्वागत करती है। वह कहती है कि बीसवीं शताब्दी को प्रायः पुस्तक का समय कहा जाता था। उन दिनों हरेक वस्तु के बारे में पुस्तकें होती थीं। वे मनुष्यों को हरेक वस्तु पढ़ाती थीं। परन्तु सबसे आश्चर्यजनक बात थी कि एक पुस्तक ने पृथ्वी को बचा लिया।

पुस्तक जिसने पृथ्वी को बचाया
कहानी का सम्बन्ध 2014 के मंगल ग्रह द्वारा आक्रमण से है। परन्तु यह कभी नहीं हुआ। एक अकेली पुस्तक ने इसे रोक दिया। यह राकेटों और प्रक्षेपास्त्रों के बारे में एक महान ग्रंथ था।

थिंक-टैंक का दिखाया जाना
फिर हिस्टोरियन प्रोजैक्टर की तरफ मुड़ती है। प्रकाश-बिन्दु थिंक-टैंक पर आती है। उसका अण्डे के आकार का भारी सिर है। वह सितारों और घेरों से सजी हुई लम्बी पौशाक पहनता है। शिक्षार्थी नूडल स्विचबोर्ड पर उसके बराबर में खड़ा है। यह मार्स स्पेस कंट्रोल है। थिंक-टैंक इसका कमाण्डर-इन-चीफ है।

थिंक-टैंक और उसका उपायुक्त नूडल
नूडल थिंक-टैंक का स्वागत करता है। वह उसके आदेशों के लिए कहता है। थिंक-टैंक नूडल को कहता है कि वह उसकी ग्रह पृथ्वी पर गए मानव द्वारा चालित आकाश यान से बात कराए। थिंक-टैंक कहता है कि वे शीघ्र ही उस पर कब्जा करने जा रहे हैं। वह अपने शीशे के लिए भी कहता है।

आकाश यान के साथ सम्बंध स्थापित
थिंक-टैंक शीशे से पूछता है कि भूमि पर कौन सबसे उत्तम व्यक्ति है। शीशा कहता है कि वह स्वयं ही है। वह पूछता है कि क्या मंगल ग्रह के वासी भद्दे पृथ्वीवासियों से अधिक सुन्दर नहीं हैं। वह नूडल को आकाश यान के साथ सम्बंध बनाने के लिए। कहता है। वे लन्च से पहले पृथ्वी पर आक्रमण करने जा रहे हैं।

दृश्य 2
दृश्य मार्स स्पेस कंट्रोल और सैन्टरविल पब्लिक लायब्रेरी का है। कैप्टन ओमेगा कार्ड सूचीपत्र की दरानें खोलता और बन्द करता हुआ खड़ा है। लेफ्टीनेन्ट आयोटा बाईं तरफ है। सरजेन्ट ऊप एक पुस्तक के पन्नों को उलटता हुआ दाईं तरफ है।

थिंक-टैंक और कैप्टन ओमेगा के बीच बातचीत
नूडल थिंक-टैंक को बताता है कि वह आकाशयान चालक दल को देख रहा है। वह आवाज जोड़ने के लिए कहता है। नूडल कैप्टन ओमेगा को अपने स्थान के बारे में बताने के लिए कहता है। कैप्टन ओमेगा कहता है कि वे बिना किसी घटना के पृथ्वी पर पहुँच गए हैं।

स्थान के बारे में
कैप्टन ओमेगा लेफ्टीनेन्ट आयोटा से पूछता है कि वे कहाँ पर हैं। लै. आयोटा उत्तर नहीं दे सकती। फिर भी वह बताती है कि वहाँ पर लगभग दो हजार अजीब वस्तुएँ (पुस्तकें) हैं। और स्थान कोई अनाज भण्डारन हो सकता है। ऊप कहता है कि उसने सात आकाशगंगाएँ देखी हैं। परन्तु उसने उन वस्तुओं जैसी कोई वस्तु कभी नहीं देखी है। वह उन्हें ‘हैट’ कहता है। ओमेगा थिंक-टैंक की सलाह के लिए कहता है। थिंक-टैंक ‘पुस्तकों’ पर देखता है। वह उन्हें ‘खाने की वस्तुएँ’ कहता है और वे जलपान गृह में हैं।

पुस्तकें ‘सैंडविच’ के रूप में
थिंक-टैंक कहता है कि जो कुछ उनके हाथों में है वे ‘सैंडविच’ हैं। वे पृथ्वी के व्यक्तियों का मुख्य भोजन हैं। थिंक-टैंक ओमेगा को इसकी पुष्टि करने के लिए उसे (पुस्तक को) खाने के लिए कहता है। ओमेगा इसे खाने के लिए तैयार है। परन्तु वह लै. ओमेगा को खाने के लिए कहता है क्योंकि उसने अभी तक नाश्ता नहीं किया है।

‘सैंडविचों’ पर आश्चर्य
आयोटा इस ‘सैंडविच’ के खाने में पहला मार्शियन बनने में महान सम्मान मानती है। वह सरजैंट ऊप को इसे खाने का आदेश देती है। ऊप, पुस्तक के एक कोने को दाँतों से काटता है। वह चबाने और निगलने का बहाना करता है। थिंक-टैंक पूछता है कि क्या यह स्वादिष्ट है। ऊप कहता है कि, हाँ यह स्वादिष्ट है। उसे आश्चर्य है कि पृथ्वी के प्राणी इसे पानी बिना कैसे खाते हैं।

थिंक-टैंक की ‘सैंडविचों’ के बारे में सोच
नूडल थिंक-टैंक को बताता है कि उसके मन में थोड़ा-सा डाटा आया है। वह बताता है कि पृथ्वीवासी इन्हें खाते नहीं थे। परन्तु वे उन्हें संचार के यंत्रों के रूप में प्रयोग करते थे। थिंक-टैंक भी इन्हें यही मानता है क्योंकि वह कभी गलत नहीं होता। वह ओमेगा को उन (पुस्तकों) को सुनने के लिए कहता है।

पृथ्वीवासियों के बारे में राय
थिंक टैंक ओमेगा से पूछता है कि क्या वह उनसे कुछ सुन रहा है। ओमेगा उत्तर देता है कि वे सम्भवतः सही तरंग पर नहीं हैं। थिंक-टैंक कहता है पृथ्वीवासियों के तेज कान होते हैं।

‘सैंडविच’ आँख संचार के रूप में
नूडल कहता है कि उसके मन में एक सूचना है। वह कहता है। |कि पृथ्वीवासियों ने उन्हें खोला और देखा था। थिंक-टैंक कहता है। कि वे ‘सैंडविच’ आँख संचार के रूप में हैं। वह कैप्टन ओमेगा को तीन ‘ सैंडविच’ लेने और उसे बताने के लिए कहता है कि वह इनमें क्या देखता है।

बुद्धि बढ़ाने के लिए विटामिन
ओमेगा उत्तर देता है कि उनके पास पृथ्वीवासियों की तस्वीरें हैं। उनके पास एक प्रकार की कोड, लाईनें और तस्वीरों के साथ-साथ बिन्दु हैं। थिंक-टैंक ओमेगा को उन विटामिनों को अपनी बुद्धि बढ़ाने के लिए लेने को कहता है। वह उसे उन तस्वीरों आदि के बारे में बताने के लिए कहता है। ओमेगा विटामिनों को निगल जाता है।

थिंक-टैंक के लिए सैंडविच’ का अर्थ
थिंक-टैंक ओमेगा को ‘सैंडविच’ के कोड को तोड़ने के लिए कहता है। ओमेगा नर्सरी तुक ‘मिस्ट्रैस मैरी …’ पढ़ता है। थिंक टैंक को आश्चर्य है कि पृथ्वीवासियों ने कृषि और खानों को कैसे इकट्ठा कर लिया है। वे विस्फोटों को उगाते भी हैं। वह नूडल को उनके आक्रमण आकाशयानों के साथ सम्पर्क करने के लिए कहता है। नूडल उत्तर देता है कि वे पृथ्वी पर कब्जा लेने के लिए तैयार हैं।

नर्सरी तुक नई सूचना के रूप में
थिंक-टैंक नूडल को आक्रमण आकाशयानों को रोकने के लिए कहता है। उसके पास नई सूचना आई है। थिंक-टैंक आयोटा को उस सूचना का अर्थ निकालने के लिए कहता है। वह नर्सरी तुक ‘हे डीडल … स्पून’ पढ़ती है। ऊप हँसता है परन्तु थिंक-टैंक हँसना रोकने के लिए कहता है।

थिंक-टैंक का पृथ्वीवासियों के बारे में अर्थ
थिंक-टैंक कहता है कि यह और भी अधिक चेतावनीजनक है। पृथ्वीवासी सभ्यता के उच्च स्तर पर पहुँच गये हैं। उन्होंने अपने सिधाए हुए जानवरों को संगीत संस्कृति और आकाशीय तकनीकों को पढ़ा दिया है। वे दस लाख गायों का एक अन्तर्ग्रहीय आक्रमण आरंभ करने वाले हैं। वह आक्रमण आकाशयानों को यह बताने के लिए कहता है। आज आक्रमण नहीं होगा। वह ऊप को अगले कोड का अर्थ बताने के लिए कहता है।

मार्स को पकड़ने की दूसरी नर्सरी तुक चेतावनी के रूप में
ऊप अगली नर्सरी तुक ‘हम्पटी डम्पटी … अगेन’ पढ़ता है। वह हम्पटी डम्पटी की तस्वीर भी दिखाता है। थिंक-टैंक चिल्लाता है। वह कहता है कि वह यह स्वयं ही है। यह उसका महान और ताकतवर गुब्बारानुमा दिमाग है। वह कहती है कि पृथ्वीवासियों ने उसे देख लिया है। वे उसके पीछे हैं। वे उसे और मार्स सैन्ट्रल कन्ट्रोल को पकड़ने की योजना बना रहे हैं।

थिंक-टैंक का मार्स से भागने का निर्णय
थिंक-टैंक नूडल को उसके लिए आकाश कैप्स्यूल तैयार करने के लिए कहता है। उसे बिना देरी से बचकर भागना चाहिए। वे मार्स पर इस पर कब्जा करने के लिए आ रहे हैं। नूडल थिंक-टैंक से पूछता है कि वे कहाँ जाएँगे। थिंक टैंक उत्तर देता है कि वे मार्स से करोड़ों मील दूर चले जाएँगे। वह अल्फा सैन्चुरी है। यह करोड़ों मील दूर है।

हिस्टोरियन बताती है कि कैसे एक पुस्तक ने संसार को मार्स के आक्रमण से बचाया।
हिस्टोरियन हास्य रूप में अपने दाँत निपोरती है। वह कहती है कि नर्सरी तुक की एक धूलभरी पुरानी पुस्तक ने संसार को मार्स के आक्रमण से बचाया। उन्होंने पच्चीसवीं शताब्दी में मार्स के साथ सम्पर्क स्थापित किया। वे मित्र बन गए। थिंक-टैंक का स्थान नूडल ने ले लिया। उन्होंने मार्क्सवासियों को पुस्तकों और सैण्डविचों के बारे में अन्तर को पढ़ाया। उन्होंने उनकी राजधानी शहर मार्मोपोलिस में एक मॉडल लायब्रेरी स्थापित की। परन्तु मार्सवासी एक पुस्तक कभी नहीं पढ़ सकते। यह है मदर गूज।।
