The Thief’s Story is about a 15 year old boy, Hari Singh, whose life changes when he meets Anil, a 25 year old writer, Anil’s unspoken words and kind gestures leaves a very positive impact on Hari Singh’s life.

About the Characters
Hari Singh He is a 15 year old, fair handed thief. He is keen on learning how to read and write. He is so experienced robber that he knows how different people will react when they are robbed. Anil He is a 25 years old, tall and lean man. He earns his living by writing. He is a kind, simple and an easy-going person.

OVERVIEW OF THE CHAPTER
Hari Singh Approaches Anil :
Hari Singh approached Anil while he was watching a wrestling match, as he seemed to be an easy target to him. Hari used some flattering words to gain Anil’s confidence and soon they started conversing. After a while, when Anil started to walk off, Hari followed him with his most appealing smile.
He expressed his wish to work for Anil. But Anil bluntly expressed his inability to pay Hari. Hari questioned Anil if he could feed him. Anil agreed to feed Hari only if he knew how to cook. Hari said that he knew how to cook but this was a lie.

Anil Brings Hari to his Room :
Anil took Hari to his room over Jumna Sweet Shop and let him occupy the balcony to sleep. Anil gave that night’s meal to a stray dog because the meal cooked by Hari was terrible. Anil had realised that Hari didn’t know how to cook. He asked Hari to go off to sleep, but Hari hung around, giving his most appealing smile. Anil patted Hari’s head and told him that he would teach him how to cook.

Anil Teaches Hari to Read and Write :
Anil taught Hari to write his name and promised to teach him how to write whole sentences and to add numbers eventually. Hari was happy and grateful for this as he knew that he could achieve anything he wanted once he knew how to read and write like an educated man. He liked working for Anil. He started making tea in the morning and buying the day’s supplies later. He used to make a profit of about a rupee on buying the day’s supplies but knew that Anil didn’t mind.

Hari had Gained Anil’s Trust :
One evening Anil came back with a bundle of currency notes he had got from selling a book he had written to a publisher. He kept the money under the mattress and slept peacefully. Hari had been working for Anil for almost a month and he had gained Anil’s trust. Hari saw the opportunity to rob Anil. It was not an easy task as he knew that Anil will be sad about the loss of money. He brushed away his thoughts and decided to execute the robbery the same night, as Anil would’ve otherwise wasted the money on his friends.

Hari Robbed Anil :
Hari considered the situation and crawled up to the bed when Anil was asleep. He slid his hand under the mattress and drew the money out quietly. He rushed out of the room and began to run on the road. He had secured the money with the string of his pyjama He was heading towards the railway station to catch 10.30 express to Lucknow as planned. He was elated when he counted the money on his way.

Hari didn’t Board the Train :
Hari reached the station just when the train was about to pick up speed. He could have managed to get into one of the carriages but something unexplainable stopped him. He was left behind on the station. He decided to leave the station and thought while walking through the bazaar about how would Anil feel when he would come to know about the theft. Hari had realised by then that he could not only cook the meals or go to the market to buy daily supplies, but he had also lost the chance to learn how to read and write. Due to these thoughts and his feeling of guilt, he decided to go back to Anil, if only for the sake of learning how to read and write.

Hari Kept the Money Back :
Hari hurried towards the room. He opened the door cautiously so as not to wake Anil up. He quickly took out the currency notes which were damp because of the rain. He crept up to the bed and placed the notes under the mattress. After that, he went off to sleep in the balcony.

Anil Reacted Normally in the Morning :
Hari woke up late in the morning. He found that Anil had already prepared tea. Anil gave a fifty rupee note to Hari, telling him that he had earned some money by selling a book to a publisher and now he would pay him regularly. Hari was motivated but he could make out that Anil knew everything though he didn’t say anything to him about it.

Chapter Highlights

वर्णनकर्ता (चोर) द्वारा अनिल के साथ मित्रता बनाना
वर्णनकर्ता एक चोर था जब वह अनिल से मिला। वह सिर्फ पन्द्रह वर्ष का था। जब वह उसके पास गया अनिल उस समय कुश्ती देख रहा था। अनिल लगभग २५ वर्ष का था और लम्बा और दुबला-पतला था। वह दयालु, साधारण और आरामपरस्त दिखता था। वर्णनकर्ता ने शीघ्र ही अनिल को अपना मित्र बना लिया। उसने झूठ बोला कि उसका नाम हरि सिंह था। वह हर महीने अपना नाम बदल लेता था। यह पुलिस या अपने पहले मालिकों से बचने के लिए था।

वर्णनकर्ता और अनिल, दोनों, अनिल के कमरे में
अनिल चला गया। वर्णनकर्ता उसके पीछे चला गया। वह मुस्कराया और उसने अनिल को बताया कि वह उसके लिए काम करना चाहता था। अनिल ने उत्तर दिया कि वह उसे पैसा नहीं दे सकता था। उसने अनिल से पूछा कि क्या वह उसे खाना खिला सकता था। अनिल ने। पूछा कि क्या वह खाना बना सकता था। वर्णनकर्ता ने झूठ बोला कि वह खाना पका सकता था। इस लिए अनिल उसे जमुना स्वीट शोप के ऊपर अपने कमरे में ले गया। उसने उसे बताया कि वह बाल्कनी में सो सकता था। वर्णनकर्ता ने खाना बनाया। परन्तु अनिल ने उसे एक कुत्ते को दे दिया क्योंकि खाना बेस्वाद था। उसने वर्णनकर्ता को जाने के लिए कहा। परन्तु वह वहाँ डटा रहा। कुछ समय पश्चात् अनिल ने उसे रुकने के लिए कह दिया। उसने उसे यह भी बताया कि वह उसे खाना बनाना सिखा देगा।

वर्णनकर्ता पुरानी चालाकी पर
वर्णनकर्ता सुबह की चाय बनाता था। वह दिन का सामान खरीदता था। उसमें वह लगभग एक रुपया प्रतिदिन लाभ कमा लेता था। अनिल जानता था कि वह उस प्रकार से पैसा बनाता है। परन्तु वह इसके बारे में कभी नहीं बोला।

अनिल और वर्णनकर्ता में विश्वास का बढ़ना
अनिल अनियमित तरीके से पैसा बनाता था। जब ज्यादा बना लेता तो वह खुशियाँ मनाता। एक शाम वह घर नोटों के एक छोटे से बण्डल के साथ आया। उसने वर्णनकर्ता को बताया कि उसने अभी अभी एक पुस्तक एक प्रकाशक को बेची है। इस समय तक वर्णनकर्ता अनिल के लिए लगभग एक महीने से कार्य कर रहा था। इस समय तक अनिल ने उसे दरवाजे की एक चाबी दे दी थी। वह जब चाहे आ जा सकता था।

वर्णनकर्ता का अनिल के पैसे चुराना
वर्णनकर्ता को अनिल को लूटना काफी कठिन लगा क्योंकि वह असावधान था। उसने लूटने की सारी खुशी छीन ली। फिर भी उसने पैसे को चुराने का निर्णय लिया। उसने इसे ठीक समझा क्योंकि अनिल उसे कोई पैसा नहीं देता था। वर्णनकर्ता ने हालात को जाँच-परखा। अनिल सोया हुआ था। उनके पास पैसा गद्दे के नीचे रखा था। यदि उसने पैसा ले लिया तो वह 10.30 की लखनऊ के लिए एक्सप्रेस पकड़ सकता था। इसलिए उसने पैसे चुराए और कमरे से बाहर चला गया।

वर्णनकर्ता का धन के साथ बच निकलना
वर्णनकर्ता ने नोटों को अपने पाजामे के नाड़े के साथ बाँध रखा था। 50 रुपए के नोटों में वे 600 रुपऐ थे। वह एक या दो सप्ताह तक तेल के धनी शेख की तरह से रह सकता था। जब वह स्टेशन पर पहुँचा तो लखनऊ एक्सप्रेस स्टेशन से बाहर जा रही थी। वह छलांग लगा कर इसमें घुस सकता था परन्तु उसने ऐसा नहीं किया। वह प्लेटफार्म पर था। उसे कोई विचार नहीं आया कि वह रात कहाँ गुज़ारेगा। वह एक होटल में भी रुकना नहीं चाहता था। वह धीरे धीरे बाज़ार में चलता रहा।

वर्णनकर्ता द्वारा अनिल के बारे में चोरी के बाद सोचना
चोर के रूप में वर्णनकर्ता ने व्यक्तियों के चेहरों को पढ़ा था जब वे अपना सामान खो देते। लालची व्यक्ति भय दर्शाते थे। अमीर गुस्सा दर्शाते थे। गरीब स्वीकृति दिखाते थे। परन्तु वह जानता था कि अनिल उदासी दिखाएगा जब उसे इसका पता चलेगा। यह उदासी विश्वास के खोए जाने के कारण होगी। ऐसी चोरी चोर के लिए हमेशा अच्छी थी।

वर्णनकर्ता बरसात में
वह एक मैदान में चला गया और एक बैंच पर बैठ गया। यह नवम्बर की ठण्डी रात थी। एक हल्की बूंदा-बाँदी ने उसके दुख को बढ़ा दिया था। शीघ्र ही तेज़ वर्षा होने लगी। वह भीग गया। वह घण्टाघर के नीचे शरणस्थान में बैठ गया।

इस स्तर पर वर्णनकर्ता के विचार
आधी रात हो गई थी। नोट गीले हो गए थे। उसने महसूस किया कि यह अनिल का पैसा था। सुबह शायद वह उसे दो या तीन रुपए दे देता। यह सिनेमा के लिए था। अब ये सारे उसके पास थे। वह उसका खाना नहीं बना सकता था और लिखना सीख नहीं सकता था।

वर्णनकर्ता को वापसी का निर्णय
वर्णनकर्ता ने चोरी के उत्साह में ये चीजें भुला दी थीं। उसने महसूस किया कि लिखाई-पढ़ाई उसे कुछ सौ से अधिक धन (रुपये) ला देगी। चोर होना साधारण है। परन्तु वास्तव में एक बड़ा, चतुर और इज्ज़तदार व्यक्ति बनना कुछ और ही है। उसने अनिल के पास वापस जाने और लिखना-पढ़ना सीखने के लिए निर्णय किया।

उसके द्वारा पैसे वापस रखना
वह कमरे में शीघ्र ही चला गया। वह काफी घबराया हुआ था। उसने दरवाजा खोला और वह दरवाज़े में खड़ा हो गया। अनिल तब भी सोया हुआ था। उसने गद्दे के नीचे नोट वापस रख दिए ।

मित्रता साबुत
वह अगली सुबह देर से जागा। अनिल ने पहले ही चाय बना ली थी। उसने वर्णनकर्ता को पचास का एक नोट दे दिया। वर्णनकर्ता का दिल बैठ गया। उसने महसूस किया कि उसका पता चल गया है। अनिल ने उसे बताया कि उसने एक दिन पहले कुछ पैसे बनाए हैं। अब वह वर्णनकर्ता को नियमित रूप से पैसे देता रहेगा। उसने यह भी बताया कि वे वाक्य लिखना आरम्भ करेंगे। वर्णनकर्ता अनिल पर अपने अत्यधिक आकर्षक रूप में मुस्कराया। अनिल चोरी के बारे में जानता था परन्तु उसने इसके बारे में उसे कुछ नहीं कहा।
