OVERVIEW OF THE CHAPTER
Meeting of Secret Agent Ausable and Writer Fowler :
Ausable was a smart secret agent, but did not look like one at all, being short and very fat. Fowler was a young writer who wanted to write about Ausable and so spent an evening with him. Fowler was feeling disappointed so far, as he could not find any characteristic of a secret agent in Ausable.
Another Secret Agent Max seen with a Pistol :
When both Ausable and fowler entered Ausable’s hotel room, another secret agent rmmed Max was waiting in the room with an automatic pistol pointed at them. Max was there because he had come to know that Ausable was going to receive an important report about some new missiles that night. Max threatened to shoot if Ausable tried to act smart.
Ausable Confuses Max :
To ensure the report’s safety as well as his own and the writer’s safety, Ausable invented a story about anybody entering his room easily through a balcony just below the window in his room. Actually there was no balcony – if anybody climbed out from the window, he would fall to his death, as the room was on the sixth floor. However, Max told them that he had entered the room through the door using a passkey.
Max Jumps In the Non-existing Balcony and Dies :
Suddenly there was a knocking on the door and Ausable pretended that it was the local police, who had been asked to provide him extra security for the important document he was about to receive. When the knocking was repeated, Max became angry at Ausable and decided to wait in the balcony (which he thought existed) until the police went away. He stepped out of the window and fell to his death.
When the door opened, a waiter came in with drinks which Ausable had ordered to be delivered to his room when he had returned to the hotel.

जासूस ओसेबल के बारे में
ओसेबल एक जासूस था। परन्तु वह वैसा दिखता नहीं था। फौलर उदास हो गया कि ओसेबल जासूस नहीं दिखता था। ओसेबल के पास एक फ्रान्सिसी होटल की छठी और सबसे ऊपरी मंजिल पर एक कमरा था।
ओसेबल और फौलर इकट्ठे
ओसेबल काफी मोटा था। वह फ्रेन्च और जर्मन बोलता था। परन्तु उसका अमेरिका का उच्चारण था। ओसेबल ने फौलर को बताया कि वह उदास होगा। वह (ओसेबल) एक जासूस की तरह नहीं दिखता था। फौलर एक लेखक था। उसे आशा थी कि वह रात में अजीब शक्लें देखेगा। वह पिस्तौलों की आवाजें भी सुनेगा और शराब में दवाई की बात सुनेगा। परन्तु उसके मामले में ऐसा कभी भी नहीं था। इसके विपरीत ओसेबल ने उसे बताया कि उसके चारों तरफ सुन्दर लड़कियाँ नहीं थीं। वह उसकी संगत में नीरसता का अनुभव करेगा। ऐसा कहते हुए ओसेबल ने फौलर के लिए अपने छोटे से कमरे का दरवाजा खोला।
पिस्तौल के साथ मैक्स दिखाई पड़ना
कुछ क्षणों के पश्चात् ओसेबल ने फौलर को बताया कि वह एक महत्त्वपूर्ण कागज देखेगा। काफी पुरुष और महिलाएँ इसके पीछे हैं। यह कागज इतिहास का रास्ता बदल सकता था।”ओसेबल ने दरवाजा बन्द कर दिया। उसने रोशनी जगा दी। फौलर ने कमरे में एक व्यक्ति को एक छोटी सी स्वचालित पिस्तौल के साथ देखा। यह मैक्स था। उसे देखकर ओसेबल ने कहा कि उसे वहाँ देखकर उसे झटका लगा है। उसने सोचा कि वह बर्लिन में होगा।
ओसेबल द्वारा मैक्स को बालकनी की उलझन में डालना
मैक्स पतला था और ज्यादा लम्बा नहीं था। वह एक लोमड़ी की तरह दिखता था। मैक्स ने ओसेबल को बताया कि वह वहाँ कुछ चीज के लिए आया था। यह था उससे कुछ प्रक्षेपास्त्रों के बारे में रिपोर्ट लेना। ओसेबल कुर्सी पर बैठ गया। उसने उसे बताया कि वह प्रबन्ध समिति को शिकायत करेगा। यह एक व्यक्ति बालकनी में साधारण खिड़की से उसके कमरे में घुस गया है के बारे में होगी। वह बालकनी एकदम बन्द करा देनी चाहिए। मैक्स ने यह कहकर प्रतिक्रिया दिखाई कि वह कमरे में बालकनी द्वारा नहीं आया। उसके पास एक चाबी (मास्टर कुंजी) थी। ओसेबल ने उसे बताया कि बालकनी अगले कमरे की थी।
रिपोर्ट के बारे में बातचीत
मैक्स ने फौलर की तरफ देखा। उसने उसे बैठने के लिए कहा। ओसेबल ने मैक्स से पूछा कि उसने रिपोर्ट के बारे में कैसे पता लगाया। मैक्स ने ओसेबल को बताया कि वह चाहता था कि उसे मालूम होता कि ओसेबल के आदमियों ने रिपोर्ट को कैसे प्राप्त कर लिया है। उसे आशा है कि रिपोर्ट उसी रात वापस मिल जाएगी। फिर दरवाजे पर खटखटाहट सुनाई दी।
‘पुलिस द्वारा धोखा
इस अकस्मात् खटखटाहट पर फौलर कूदा। ओसेबल मुस्कराया। उसने बताया कि यह पुलिस थी। उसने पुलिस को इस महत्त्वपूर्ण कागज के बारे में बताया था। इसको फालतू संरक्षण की आवश्यकता थी। इसलिए पुलिस हरेक चीज ठीक करने के लिए वहाँ आ गई थी।
मैक्स न होने वाली ‘बालकनी’ में
यह सुनकर मैक्स घबरा गया। ओसेबल ने मैक्स से पूछा कि वह क्या करेगा। यदि ओसेबल दरवाजा नहीं खोलता है तो पुलिस किसी भी तरीके से अन्दर आ जाएगी। दरवाजे पर ताला नहीं था। पुलिस गोली भी चला सकती थी क्योंकि कागजात बहुत महत्त्वपूर्ण थे। मैक्स का चेहरा गुस्से से काला पड़ गया था। उसने खिड़की खोली और रात में अपनी टाँग बाहर रखी। उसने ओसेबल को पुलिस वापस भेजने के लिए कहा। वह बालकनी में जायेगा और प्रतीक्षा करेगा। उसने उसे चेतावनी भी दी कि वह गोली चला देगा और अपने अवसर का प्रयोग करेगा। (वहाँ कोई बालकनी नहीं थी।)
मैक्स का नीचे गिरना
दरवाजे पर खटखटाहट तेज हो गई। मैक्स की पिस्तौल का निशाना ओसेबल और फौलर पर था। वह अपने दूसरे स्वतन्त्र हाथ से दरवाजे को सहारे के लिए पकड़े हुए था। फिर उसने अपनी दूसरी टाँग ऊपर और खिड़की की दहलीज पर रखी । दरवाजे की कुण्डी हिली। मैक्स ने अपने को स्वतन्त्र किया और ‘बालकनी’ में कूद गया। वह तेजी से चीखा। इसका अर्थ है कि वह फर्श पर गिर गया था।
बैरे की अन्दर की सेवा
दरवाजा खुला। एक बैरा ट्रे, एक बोतल और दो गिलास लिए खड़ा था। उसने मेज पर ट्रे रख दी थी। उसने बोतल खोली और कमरे से चला गया।
ओसेबल द्वारा स्वंय को सही जासूस सिद्ध करना
इससे फौलर आश्चर्यचकित हो गया। उसने ओसेबल से पुलिस के बारे में पूछा। ओसेबल ने उसे बताया कि वहाँ पर कोई पुलिस नहीं थी। फौलर ने बालकनी के व्यक्ति अर्थात् मैक्स के बारे में पूछा। ओसेबल ने उसे बताया कि वह वापस नहीं लौटेगा। इस प्रकार ओसेबल ने मैक्स को मात दे दी थी।
